As the wave of baby-boomers swept through Kettering, OH, Fairmont High School was overflowing its capacity. In 1963, Fairmont East High School was opened and Fairmont High School became Fairmont West High School. For 20 years, there was a good-natured cross-town rivalry between the Fairmont East Falcons and the Fairmont West Dragons. By 1983, the tidal wave was subsiding and the schools were rejoined on the West campus as the Kettering Fairmont Firebirds. When the high school moved out, the Fairmont East High School buildings became Kettering Junior High School and is now called Kettering Middle School. (Interesting note: The Junior/Middle school was originally the Falcons, that was changed to the Wildcats, then, in 2005, they changed again to the Firebirds.)
Fairmont East won three State Championships during their existence, two in gymnastics and one in softball. [Actually, they won four. I'm still researching their 3rd gymnastics championship.]
• In 1964, Tom Sexton won 1st place on the parallel bars at the Ohio State Gymnastics Championship Meet. That was a warm-up for his 1965 performance where he won the All-Around trophy and led the Falcon gymnasts to their first team state title.
• Tom went on to the University of Oklahoma where he earned All-American honors, then returned to Fairmont East as the gymnastics coach and led them to their second title in 1971.
• As a going away gift, the Fairmont East girl's softball team won the Ohio state championship in 1982.
(newspaper clipping) Kettering Fairmont East pounded Westerville North 12-3 for the AAA title. Jean Nace struck out two batters, walked three and hit one of four triples for Kettering which finished at 27-1. Jane Rawlings, Andrea Kerregan and Jeanne Banke also tripled for the winners.
The Falcons' baseball team came close to a championship in 1971, falling in the Finals to Findlay 10-8 in extra innings. Here's a recap of the 1971 State Championship game.
Falcons Fight Song
On Falcons, Victory
Win for the red and the blue
Always fight and never yield
We will drive on through
Fight! Fight! Fight!
May we forever be
Known for spirit true
As we raise to the sky
Shouts of our battle cry
For Fairmont East!
Listen to the Alumni Band play the Fight Song
