T. L. Handy High School was located on the west side of Bay City, Michigan, at 601 Blend Street. The land and the building for the school were donated by Thomas Lincoln Handy, a rich land owner of the area. Built in 1922, the building originally housed T. L. Handy Junior High School, one of the most advanced junior high schools in the country.
By 1945, Bay City had outgrown Central High School and the decision was made to renovate the Junior High and convert it into a high school to serve students on Bay City's west side. T. L. Handy High School was opened in 1946.
As was the case with most cities, the baby boomers stretched the capacity of existing schools in the 1960's. By 1970, both T. L. Handy High School and Central High School had exceeded their capacities. Both schools resorted to split sessions, with some students attending school in the mornings, the remainder attending in the afternoon.
The crunch was relieved in 1973, when Western High School was opened and new school district boundaries were established. Seniors at T. L. Handy High School were allowed to remain and graduate from Handy if they chose.
Once the baby boomer wave had passed, there was no longer a need for three high schools in Bay City and T. L. Handy was converted back to a middle school, graduating it's last class in 1990.
In 2008, a $14 million renovation project was begun at T. L. Handy Middle School to expand and upgrade the cafeteria, provide new computer labs on each floor, update the science classrooms and renovate all the classrooms.
With the closing of T. L. Handy High School, much of the accumulated memorabilia was disposed of. George W. Stevenson, who spent 28 years in the Bay City school district (17 years as Handy High School principal), along with fellow former Handy educator Ron Hughes, took it upon themselves to salvage what they could of the memorabilia that could be saved. Together they created the T. L. Handy High Memorabilia Hall, which was dedicated in 2005 and is comprised of 12 display cases located inside the middle school. Mr. Stevenson passed away in Jan., 2009, but his dedication and contribution to Handy High alumni lives on in the Memorabilia Hall.
