  • History of Muncie-area High School Swimming

Northside High School was opened in 1970 to serve the growing north side of Muncie, then, after 18 years, was closed, with most students moving to Central High School. In 1989, the building was re-opened as Muncie Northside Middle School. (Try out the Google Street View, below. Google removed one short stretch in front of the main entrance, but other than that, you can virtually "drive" all around the circle drive.)

In its brief 18 year history, Northside was a sports machine. They won at least 121 sectional, regional and state championships. We've listed the ones we know about below. (source: Indiana High School Athletics Association)

    Memories of Northside High School
    (from Gene Amlin, NHS '74)
I was in the first four-year class at Northside from 1970 to 1974. Our athletic teams, coaches and fans were among the best in Indiana in several sports. We played most of our home basketball games in the Muncie Fieldhouse, where I played alongside Luther Bradley, Sam Drummer, Pete Kuzma and many other talented players. In 1973 we entered the sectional highly ranked with a 19-2 record. In the second round against Yorktown, Bradley made two free throws with seven seconds to play to give us a one-point lead, but Jim Holstein made a desperation shot at the buzzer to give Yorktown the victory. This was the first time I saw players weep in the locker room after a loss and I remember thinking how glad I was that I had another year left.

In '74 we went on a ten game winning streak to end the season and dominated the sectional beating South, Central and Delta to claim North's first sectional title. The Titan fans followed us to Chrysler Fieldhouse in New Castle for the regional, where we beat Eastern Hancock in the afternoon game and faced Richmond that night in the championship. There was a sea of blue in the stands wearing red hats and I remember running out and hearing a deafening roar that seemed to lift me off the ground. Kuzma had the last shot in overtime, but it was not to be. The next morning I remember feeling a knot in my stomach that I can still recall after 36 years.

The next year Myron Dickerson's team made it one step closer to the dream of a state championship winning the school's only regional title, before falling to Rushville in the semi-state at Hinkle Fieldhouse. I watched from the stands as Drummer, Tom Hinga and Greg Dobbs played their last game for North. My wife thinks it's a bit odd that sometimes I cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, yet I can remember scores, statistics and details of these events that happened forty years ago. They were exhilarating times and left an indelible imprint on my life.
