Michigan City High Schools
For the 1970-71 school year, Michigan City's only public high school, Elston, was packed full with 2,700 students. The pressure was relieved by the opening of Rogers High School in September, 1971. Twenty five years later, in 1995, the crush of the baby boomers had passed and the city decided to consolidate the high schools. Elston High School was closed, with the building being converted into a middle school. Rogers High School was closed, but re-opened as Michigan City High School.

Elston High School was named for Isaac C. Elston, a pioneer land speculator who laid out the town of Michigan City.

In athletics, most residents remember the boys basketball team which won the 1966 Indiana State Championship. Their Northern Indiana Conference opponents will remember the 40 Sectional Championships the Red Devils won, including an incredible streak of 24 years in a row from 1952-75.

Elston produced a number of individual athletes who placed first in State Championships, including six in swimming. The girls Cross Country team won back-to-back State Championships for the Red & White in 1994 and 1995.

Rogers High School was named for Dr. Jesse Belmont Rogers, an obstetrician who delivered more than 6,000 babies in Michigan City in a medical career that spanned 43 years.

In 1971, Michigan City Area Schools were under pressure to open a new high school to relieve over- crowding at Elston. The construction of Rogers High School in 1971 was both ambitious and amazing. Construction was begun in March and students filled the classrooms six months later in September.

In athletics, the Blue & Gold Raiders won their share of Conference, Sectional & Regional championships. Five Rogers swimmers won State Championships and the girls Golf Team won back-to-back Indiana State Championships in 1982 and 1983.
