WMTH Radio and TV The Voice of Maine Township High School(s) established 1959
|
Maine Township High School started in 1902 in Des Plaines, IL. In 1929, a new building was built in Park Ridge and Maine Township High School operated there until 1959.
After World War II, the Park Ridge area grew as Chicagoans fled to the suburbs and the wave of baby boomers swelled school enrollments. In 1959, Maine Township High School struggled under the weight of over 7,000 students, splitting into morning and afternoon sessions. In 1960, many students moved to the newly constructed Maine West High School, with MTHS becoming Maine East High School.
The list of notable Maine Township High School alumni is long. Two of the most recognizable former students are Hillary Rodham Clinton and Harrison Ford.
As successful as Maine Township was in academics, being named one of the 44 best high schools in the U. S., the Demons were also successful in athletics. They won Illinois state championships in baseball, track & field (twice) and swimming & diving (5 times) as well as numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes in several sports.
